The Role of a Doula – Creating Your Own Birth Experience

When thinking about the birth experience you wish for, please keep in mind that a doula can help you to create that experience. In addition, if it turns out that your birth doesn’t exactly match your vision, a doula can still help you achieve a positive birth experience.

Although doulas have been around for hundreds of years, there are still misunderstandings about who might benefit from the services of a doula.

Well, we’re here to dispel those misunderstandings… so right off the top we’d like to tell you:

  • Doulas provide support to the birthing mother and to her birth partner. This support comes in many forms: informational, physical, and emotional.
  • Doulas attend all types of births: natural, medicated, home births, hospital births, birth center births.
  • Doulas provide critical support during both vaginal and cesarean births.
  • Doulas work in harmony with your doctor or midwife, providing many different types of support to moms and families. They do not perform medical procedures.

At Emerald City Doulas our mission is to provide families with outstanding nonjudgmental support. Whatever the needs and desires of the family, we are there for them. Our goal is to leave our families feeling loved, cared for, and empowered throughout the entire journey as they become parents. To that end we are prepared with informational, emotional, and physical support for every family we work with.

One thing to keep in mind when you begin looking for a doula: think about what you want from them — and be clear with them as you move forward with the process. If you don’t feel comfortable talking about your needs from the very start, you will very likely have trouble communicating those needs to your doula when you’re in labor.

Contact us today and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you have about how an Emerald City Doula can support you and help you create your own birth experience!
